CHRISTIANSBURG – A judge set bond at $2,500 for Virginia Tech sophomore tailback Michael Holmes on Tuesday morning. Holmes appeared before Montgomery County General District Court judge Randal Duncan, who set the bond amount and ordered Holmes not to leave the state or have any contact with the three people involved in the fight that led to him being charged with two counts of simple assault and one felony count of malicious wounding.
Holmes is scheduled to be released at 11:15 a.m.
The victim was identified in court as Antoine Barnes, a cousin of Kierra Barnes. Kierra Barnes and Ciara Simms were arrested Tuesday on assault charges stemming from the fight.
According to Holmes’ attorney, Jimmy Turk, Simms, an ex-girlfriend of Holmes’, and Barnes started an altercation with Holmes’ new girlfriend, that led to the fight at the 200 block of College Avenue in Blacksburg early Sunday morning.
Turk argued that Holmes’ acted “in self defense” and noted he had “strong ties to the community” and had never been in legal trouble before.
The commonwealth’s attorney argued against bond for Holmes.
Turk said an independent witness will testify that Holmes acted in self defense.
Outside the courtroom, Holmes’ mother, Tonya Brandon, tearfully talked about the ordeal.
“I haven’t had a chance to talk to him at all,” Brandon said. “It’s horrible. It’s a mother’s nightmare. When you have a child who is so, I’m not going to say perfect but, perfect in my eyes. It’s my child. Michael’s a hard worker when it comes to school. Michael’s a very loveable person, always kisses me, tells me he loves me. This shouldn’t have happened. It should not have happened at all.”
Brandon said Holmes’ ex-girlfriend was following Holmes and his current girlfriend from party to party Saturday night. Holmes decided to leave and go home when the ex-girlfriend, Simms, and her friend, Barnes, assaulted Holmes’ current girlfriend, Brandon said.
Brandon said Holmes attempted to break up the fight to help his current girlfriend, when Barnes’ cousin jumped in and that led to a fight between Holmes and Antoine Barnes, the cousin, in which Barnes was injured.
