Abbott explains decision to transfer

BLACKSBURG – Former Virginia Tech kicker Brooks Abbott said he plans to visit Florida, South Carolina and Central Florida this fall, among other schools, as he looks for a program to transfer into.
Abbott, who is enrolled at Florida State College at Jacksonville this semester, said he’d characterize his overall experience at Tech as “a great one.” Questions about playing time and a desire to be closer to home led to his decision to leave the program.
“It came down to a family decision and what we thought was best for me,” Abbott, a Jacksonville native, said Tuesday night by phone from Florida. “Where Coach [Frank] Beamer was heading we didn’t think he was going to use my skills like he could.”
At Tech, Abbott was senior Cody Journell’s backup going into this season. Abbott played in seven games last season, serving as the Hokies’ kickoff man. He averaged 61.5 yards per kickoff with nine touchbacks and had five tackles in coverage
Abbott said he will use this year as a redshirt year and be a redshirt sophomore next fall. He plans to transfer to his next program in time to play spring ball.
